Oosik is a term used in Alaska to describe the baculum of walruses, seals, sea lions, and polar bears.
Sometimes as long as 60 cm (2 ft), fossilized bacula are often polished and used as a handle for knives and other tools.

The baculum (also penis bone, penile bone or os penis) is a bone found in the penis of most mammals. It is absent in humans, equids, marsupials, lagomorphs, hyenas, and cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) among others. It is used for copulation and varies in size and shape by species. Its characteristics are sometimes used to differentiate between similar species. The oosik of Native Alaskan cultures is a polished and sometimes carved baculum of various large northern carnivores such as walruses.

About Jim Lee

I took up Ivory Carving as a hobby in 1981 and now it is my only source of income. I really enjoy working with Fossil Walrus Ivory as each piece I cut into has different character and colors from cream to black. The Ivory comes from Saint Laurence Island here in Alaska. The local Natives are the only People that can collect the material in the surrounding area and it provides a supplemental income in an area of mainly subsistence living and scant resources.
I also use Fossil Whale Bone to carve Whales and Bear fishing for Salmon Scenes.
I live 80 miles North of Anchorage so that I can be in better touch with the wildlife Alaska has to offer. I enjoy Fishing, Hunting and Gardening and I have received Grand Champion Awards for my Yukon gold Potatoes at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer AK.
