About Jim Lee

I took up Ivory Carving as a hobby in 1981 and now it is my only source of income. I really enjoy working with Fossil Walrus Ivory as each piece I cut into has different character and colors from cream to black. The Ivory comes from Saint Laurence Island here in Alaska. The local Natives are the only People that can collect the material in the surrounding area and it provides a supplemental income in an area of mainly subsistence living and scant resources.
I also use Fossil Whale Bone to carve Whales and Bear fishing for Salmon Scenes.
I live 80 miles North of Anchorage so that I can be in better touch with the wildlife Alaska has to offer. I enjoy Fishing, Hunting and Gardening and I have received Grand Champion Awards for my Yukon gold Potatoes at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer AK.
